Jesse’s Soul Wisdom
Jesse Biggio is a talented singer and the closest thing you’ll find to a real life fairy ;)
Typically I draw people sitting in one position, but Jesse asked if she could lay down after feeling some discomfort in her back. It felt important to encourage her to listen to her body to shift the usual pattern of “muscling through”. Near the end she felt better in an upright position, so I was able to finish the initial face. I was surprised at how much older she looked than the person that sat before me, and I was nervous to show her.
It turned out that she had encountered a beautiful, older woman with short pink hair and was left with the sentiment, I want to be like her when I’m older. And she had pictures saved on her phone of women with different versions of the hairstyle she admired.
Despite how often things like this occur when I’m making art, I’m still in awe of how I can “know” something about a person without knowing that I know it. And it makes me even more curious about how information flows between people.
Jesse’s Soul Wisdom: Soften into Earth
Your success is inevitable.
It waits for You…
For you to crawl into the womb
of your older self
and grow wise in darkness.
It will feel like you are lost.
And then a voice will come:
“Lay on the Earth when your body aches.
Pour forth your heart as it gently breaks.
Lay down to rest while your path is being laid.
You are doing enough.
Simply soften your rush
and savor the hush of lush green.”
I love you future self
One of the strongest themes that emerged was around considering her future self when she makes decisions. This drawing brings a tangible quality to the understanding that we will become someone. Our future self already exists and we can be a friend or foe to her well-being. A song to illustrate:
